William Henry Thompson, 68, lifelong resident of Westford, died December 16, 2009 in Ayer. He was born June 27, 1941 in Ayer, MA, a son of the late William Thompson and the late Mary (Caunter) Thompson. He joined the United States Army September 6, 1969, serving in Vietnam and was Honorably Discharged August 15, 1973. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, two Overseas Bars, and two Service Stripes. Prior to his retirement, he was a custodian at the Norman E. Day School in Westford. Mr. Thompson was a lifetime member of the VFW, Mattawanakee Post #6539, serving as State Commander from 1978 to 1979 and National Junior Vice Commander from 1980 to 1981. In addition, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post #159 and a lifetime member of the Franco American Club in Forge Village. He is survived by his sister, Betty Courchaine of Orange City, FL., his aunt and uncle, Florence and Kenneth Stuart of Townsend, several nieces, nephews and friends.
