| Obituary: Benjamin Lauder Young, 87, of Westford, died in Concord on July 29, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline C. (Danby) Young. They were married for 55 years. Ben was born in Hetton, County Durham, England in 1923, the son of John and Mary Lauder Young, and was educated in County Durham and London. At age 17, during WW II, Ben was below ground in Eppelton mine, England, as an assistant surveyor. He traveled alone, testing for methane gas with the miners’ safety in mind. After spending several years in London as a surveyor, he joined the Royal Air Force as an officer cadet in fighter pilot training. His orders took him to Eygpt and Rhodesia in South Africa. He worked in Norfolk, England as an experimental officer for the Air Ministry, after the war. Moving to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the early 1950s, he joined Westinghouse and became a lead engineer. While in Canada, he obtained his private pilot’s license. Ben and his family came to the United States in 1958 where he was employed as an electronic engineer with the Missile Systems Division at Raytheon Company in Bedford for more than 25 years. He received numerous Inventors’ Awards. He liked to travel and in earlier days traveled extensively in Europe – particularly France, Switzerland, Denmark and Holland. He often re-visited England and spent summers in Clam Harbour on the rugged coastline of Nova Scotia. An active man, he enjoyed time with his family, sailing, playing tennis, hiking, bicycling, and swimming. He was an amateur violinist with a particular fondness for classical music. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children; Jennifer Landine and her husband William of Ashburnham, MA, Kathryn Pioli and her partner Bruce Marinelli of Winchendon, MA, and Mary Mullens and her husband Joseph of Wilmington, MA. He leaves eight grandchildren; Joshua Clancy and his finance Lisa Campbell, Shawn Clancy, Kevin Clancy, Jason Pioli, Nicholas Pioli, Kara Pioli, Jacqueline and Michael Mullens. He also leaves behind relatives in England; a dear sister-in-law Anne Loten and her daughter Maria, niece Claire Higgins, and her husband Philip and Pamela Hopgood and her husband Phillip. Ben was the brother of John Young, James Young and Anne L. Johnson, all of whom predeceased him. |
