  Barbara Brown Seavey
  Birth & Death Dates:
10/14/1914 - 4/19/2011
  SeaveyObituary:
Mrs. Barbara Brown Seavey (Mrs. Gordon B. Seavey), a longtime resident of Westford, MA dies at age 96 on Patriot's Day, April 19. Mrs. Seavey was born in Deerfield, NH on Oct. 14, 1914. Her father, George W. Brown, was a prominent NH legislator and farmer in Deerfield. Her mother, Bertha Rand Brown, taught school and helped to manage the farm. The youngest of four children, the former Barbara Brown, attended grades 1-8 in a one room school house. She graduated from Raymond, NH high school in 1932. Outside of her schooling she was expected to work on farm chores with her family, and in the process she became an excellent horsewoman. She graduated from the University of NH where she received a B.S. degree, and was president of her sorority, Kappa Delta.

Mrs. Seavey met Gordon B. Seavey, the owner, editor and publisher of the Belmont Citizen. They were married on Jan. 8, 1949 and were well known residents of both Belmont and Littleton, MA where they had a summer residence on Forge Pond. They traveled extensively around the world with the U.S. Weekly Newspaper Publishers Association. Mrs. Seavey also had a notable 40 year career in Customer Service with New England Telephone/AT&T of Boston.

After Mr. Seavey's death in 1996, she continued to live in Westford. She was always an active participant in community affairs, a philanthropic supporter of conservation and preservation initiatives, camp experiences for Boston children, and global human rights causes. She was a strong supporter of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, a distinguished family mentor to 4 generations, an avid bird watcher, and a lifelong member of the Audubon Society.

In recent years, Mrs. Seavey suffered a variety of illnesses. These were never sufficient to dampen her independent spirit or her love for the Boston Red Sox. She was a prolific reader, and kept up daily with world events.

She is survived by a nephew, Bruce Herrmann, of Wolfeboro, NH, and three nieces, Susan Brown Smith of Villanova, PA, Janet Brown Ritch of Duxbury, MA, and Nancy Brown-McKinney, of Deerfield, NH, and she leaves behind a goddaughter, Alexis Baker, and her mother Cynthia Baker of Amherst, NH. She would also want to acknowledge her devoted friend and caregiver, Virginia Moore, of Westford and her many wonderful and supportive neighbors and friends.
