  Sczylvian Obituary:
Westford – Stephen J. Sczylvian, Sr.,86, beloved husband of the late Barbara Dee (Hibbert) Sczylvian, lifelong resident of Westford, died July 23rd in Lowell. He was born September 19, 1922 in Westford, a son of the late Adam Szylvian and the late Sophie (Wajanrowska) Szylvian. He attended Westford schools and received his High School diploma in 2000 due to his volunteering for military service at a young age. He served as a Merchant Marine from 1942 to 1945 and served another tour of duty from 1951 to 1953. Prior to his retirement, he was a stationary engineer at Hollingsworth and Vose. Mr. Sczylvian was a member of the D.A.V., the American Legion, Post 437 and an original member of the Littleton-Westford Elks. He was an avid gardener, and long serving member of the Kiwanis, known especially for his work at the Apple Blossom Festival. He loved his family and grandchildren, affectionately known as the “Pershing Street Boosters.” Mr. Sczylvian is survived by his children; Carol Frances Sczylvian and her companion Chet Kowalczyk of Windham, N.H., Patti Ann Muccio and her husband Scott of Concord, N.H., Stephen J. Sczylvian, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Westford, a sister, Irene Szylvian of the Graniteville section of Westford, and was the “Poppa” of grandchildren Stephanie, Justin, Brett, Kelsey and Nicholas, a daughter-in-law Elaine (Dewey) Sczylvian of Westford, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend Mary Currie of Chelmsford. He was the father of the late William A. “Melsi” Sczylvian. He was brother to Edmund Szylvian, Vital Szylvian, Francis Szylvian, Genevieve Haran, Frances Tamkun, Vicki Buckley, Gladys McGovern Needham, and Charlotte Clark, all of whom pre-deceased him. Friends may call at the Healy Funeral Home on Monday, July 27th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. His funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, 107 North Main St., Westford. Burial to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial contributions in his name to the charity of one’s choice.
