Beatrice “Mary” (Vetter) Romac passed away with her family and friends near on February 24, 2026, at the age of 93. She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished her faith and family above all else.
Born in Ticonderoga, NY on August 23, 1932, as the only child to Duane John Vetter and Beatrice Mary (Arthur) Vetter. Mary graduated from Horicon High School in 1950 in the top third of her class and entered St. Peters Hospital for Nursing, graduating with her RN in 1953. While on a “short” vacation to California after graduation, she found a position as nurse in Santa Monica. There, while working to earn enough money to return to New York State, she met Marine Staff Sergeant, Richard J. Romac and they married on August 6, 1955. After serving in the Korean War, Richard was discharged from the USMC, and they returned to upstate New York, where Richard attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to earn his BS in Engineering. In May of 1956, their first child was born and within the next three years two more children arrived to their home in Troy, NY. While Richard studied, Mary worked at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy.
Following graduation in 1960, the family moved briefly to Arlington, Massachusetts and eventually settled in Sudbury, Massachusetts. There, Mary began a long-term (20+ year) association with the Emerson Hospital of Concord, Massachusetts, where three more Romac children arrived. Mary started in the Pediatric Department, then Operating Room and finally, fell in love with the Emergency Room. The family moved to an old farm in Westford, that Mary dedicated the next 33 years of her life making it a home for her family. Mary and Richard both became very active members of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Westford.
Mary loved her Catholic faith. She also loved gardening and became a leading member of the Westford Garden Club. In 1984, Mary joined Bullock’s Nursing Service, a home-care provider for the Concord area. In 1999, her husband of 44 years passed away and Mary set off on a new adventure to Maine. Moving to a home on Long Pond in Mount Vernon, Maine, where she loved the Lake Life. She always looked forward to having her growing number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit her. Boat rides on the lake, cross-country skiing or snow shoeing, sitting on her porch watching the loons pass by or just enjoying all the wonders of Maine with her friends, family and dogs, Charlie, Copper and recently, Thor, filling her days.
Mary is survived by her six children, John Romac of Mount Vernon, ME, Lynne Smithwood Esq. of Westford, Greg Romac of Gardner, Dr. Mike Romac of Bath ME, Chris Romac of Del- Ray Beach, FL and Tom Romac of Chelmsford; her eleven adored grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
