Gloucester

John P. “Jack” Carpenter, 68, passed away following a life defined by deep Woburn roots, historic resilience, and peaceful later years by the sea in Gloucester.

Born in Woburn on July 6, 1957, he was the son of the late Frederick C. and Kathryn “Kay” (Doyle) Carpenter. Jack was raised and educated in Woburn and was a proud graduate of Woburn High School.

Jack was famously known to his friends, family, and medical teams as a "medical marvel." After a lifelong battle with juvenile diabetes, Jack became a medical pioneer in 1995 when he underwent one of the first double transplants of the pancreas and kidney. His transplant teams were consistently amazed by his strength and willingness to serve as an example for others in the same situation.

For over 20 years, Jack served as the facilities manager for two professional buildings in Woburn. He was the backbone of the operations he managed, and his professional expertise mirrored his personal life. Jack was the kind of friend who showed up with a helping hand and the right tools before he was even asked. Whether it was a major mechanical issue at work or a neighbor’s leaking pipe, Jack was the man his community could always count on.

In 2016, Jack moved to Gloucester. He spent his later years perfecting the art of coastal retirement, becoming a familiar fixture of the shoreline with his faithful shadow, Ginger. Together, Jack and Ginger maintained a daily schedule of "supervising" the harbor, where Jack found great peace watching the boats come in and out with the tide.

Jack was predeceased by his parents and by his brother, Frederick P. Carpenter.

He is survived by his brother, Bob Carpenter, and his wife, Janet along with his niece Kate Bennitt and nephew Chris Carpenter. He also leaves behind a sprawling network of close friends and former colleagues in the Woburn and Gloucester communities, and of course, his dog Ginger.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s name may be made to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
