John A. Pietras

GROTON - John A. Pietras, age 94, passed away at his Groton home on March 27, 2017. He was born on his family farm in Groton on May 5, 1922 to Andrew and Catherine (Haberski) Pietras. He graduated from Groton High School in 1940.


In 1942, he chose to serve his country in WWII as a paratrooper in the 509 Parachute Infantry Battalion. He fought in North Africa, Italy (Anzio), France and Belgium (Battle of the Bulge). He earned many decorations and commendations including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Emblem, American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal.


In 1947 he married his wife of 70 years, Georgette (Socha) of Forge Village, Westford. Together they raised 5 children. He retired after many years of working in the Leather Tannery Industry. John was very devoted to his family and loved the outdoors. He was well known for his long daily walks in the woods behind his house.


In addition to his wife Georgette, he is survived by his son John and wife Michaela of Minnesota, daughter Anne of Florida, son Philip and wife Kathy of Groton, son Andrew and wife Peg of Groton, son Michael and husband Mark of Virginia. Six grandchildren, Chad, Ryan, Sarah, Yana, Rex and Lily and two great-grandchildren, Calvin and Lilah.


Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters Jennie, Stephanie, Julia Pietras and Anne Connell (his twin).


The family would like to extend a special thanks to Melissa, Amanda, Michelle, Hillary and Rhonda for their devoted care that made it possible for John to remain in his home during his final years.


ARRANGEMENTS- A private Catholic Mass and burial will be held in John's honor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in John's name to the Saint Benedict Abbey, 252 Still River Road, PO Box 67, Still River, MA 01467-0067. Arrangements are in the care of the J. A.
