Judith Enright Daly

September 18, 1939 — November 17, 2022

Westford

Judith “Judy” Enright Daly passed away on November 17, 2022.

Judy was born September 18, 1939 to James Arthur Enright and Dorothy Elizabeth (Head) in Long Branch, N.J. She was brought up in Fair Haven, N.J. and attended the Fair Haven school system and then Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, where she was a multi-sport athlete. She matriculated at the University of Vermont in the fall of 1957, graduating with a B.S. in education in 1961, despite having had to take botany three times. While at UVM she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and continued to play field hockey and basketball. Post-graduation she embarked on a lengthy career as an elementary school teacher.

The Fair Haven school system is also where she first met Robert “Bob” Daly – in kindergarten – beginning a relationship that would last over 70 years. Judy and Bob were married in 1962, immediately after which they moved to New Mexico where Judy taught school while Bob served in the USAF. In 1965 they moved to Belmont, Massachusetts and Judy taught in the Lexington school system.

In 1972 they moved to their home in Westford, Massachusetts where Judy would reside for the rest of her life and began a long tenure as a 5th grade teacher at the Robinson, Nabnasset, and Norman E. Day elementary schools in town. She greatly enjoyed her career in Westford and was well known by many of her students for her personal attention, enthusiastic advocacy of reading, and perhaps most famously for doing head stands to demonstrate the scientific principle of peristalsis (the ability to swallow food while upside down). Judy was an avid tennis player and spent years teaching the sport to many Westford children. It is not surprising that she seemed to know everyone in town and they knew her! In the winters she delighted in ski trips with her family, and during summers loved nothing more than spending time on the beaches of Outer Cape Cod.

Judy retired from teaching in 2001 but maintained a presence in the Westford school system as a much sought-after substitute. She kept busy doting on her six grandchildren, playing golf and tennis, joining the Board of the Westford Historical Museum, working the polls at elections, and taking trips to Europe with family and friends - including family adventures to Ireland and Germany with her children and grandchildren. She is remembered for her kindness, generosity, baking a dizzying variety of cookies around the holiday season for distribution to friends and neighbors, and for having a plethora of house plants - notwithstanding her struggles in college with botany.

She leaves her two children, Kristen Daly Schneider (Greig T. Schneider) of Norfolk, MA, and David Robert Daly (Holly Marcinkowski) of Lunenburg, MA, as well as six grandchildren: Garrett Thomas Schneider, Katarina Daly Schneider, Brenton Robert Schneider, Finn David Daly, Michael Thaddeus Daly, and Cashel James Daly.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Judy’s Celebration of Life at First Parish Church United, 48 Main Street, Westford on December 19 from 9:00-11:00 AM. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of the First Parish Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Judy’s memory to the Children’s Hospital Boston or via check to the Westford Public Schools to benefit the Norman E. Day School.
