WESTFORD - Richard T. Holmes, age 81, a lifelong resident of Westford, MA passed away peacefully Monday, June 18th, 2018 at Lowell General Hospital. Richard, a Korean War Veteran, was born in Lowell, MA September 24th, 1936 to the late Arthur and Jeanette (Leduc) Holmes of Graniteville, MA.
Richard was a graduate of Redford Union High School in Detroit, MI where he was a fine athlete, concentrating in baseball. After graduation, he proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict as a member of the U. S. Army, while also playing on the 8th Army baseball team. He returned home in 1958 and throughout his life he primarily worked in the printing industry, having a knack for offset printing techniques.
Always a sports enthusiast, Richard coached Little League and “Small Fry” league in Westford. He followed the local and New England sports scene and was always eager to share opinions about the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics. Richard’s engaging personality is fondly remembered along with his captivating stories and seemingly never-ending memory of Westford people and events.
He is survived by his four sisters Claire Sherman and her husband Frank of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Janet and Bryant Dutton of Ayer, MA, Elaine and John Trainor of Mendon, MA and Susanne Marshall and her husband William of Palo Alto, CA. Richard was predeceased by his brothers Robert and Bernard of Westford and Daniel of Plymouth. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Patricia and Diane Holmes of Westford and Carol Holmes of Plymouth, Richard is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS - Visitation will be held at the J.A. Healy Sons Funeral Home, 57 N. Main Street, Westford from 3PM to 7PM, Thursday, June 21st. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Catherine of Alexandria Church, 107 N. Main Street, Westford at 10AM Friday morning, June 22nd. A private burial will be held at a later date at St. Catherine of Alexandria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to please consider a memorial donation in Richard’s name to either the Veterans Gift Fund which is used exclusively for veterans and their family within the Town of Westford or to the Westford Ambulance Fund.
