William Francis Melchin of Westford, Massachusetts passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026. He was 75 years old. William was the loving son of Charles and Kay (Lyons) Melchin.
The second of five siblings, William grew up in Dorchester and Weymouth, Massachusetts. He was known affectionately as “Dub” then, particularly to his younger brothers and sister, who could always count on him for support, mentorship, and even entertainment.
After graduating Weymouth High School in 1968, William took classes at Bridgewater State and Massasoit Community College. Outside the classroom, he spent a great deal of time nurturing his love for music of many kinds, and he played in a number of bands and duos throughout his life. A true multi-instrumentalist, he was equally at home on a piano, a variety of stringed instruments, a drum kit, and even the occasional woodwind. He took great joy in jamming with siblings and friends, and in performing for children.
William’s love for children extended into many areas of his life. He spent part of his career working at Westford’s after school program, and was always delighted to spend time with little ones. Besides his musical talent, he loved to draw, particularly when he could make a cute sketch for a young audience.
As far as being drawn to nurture and care for young people, William met his match in Martha “Mardie” Rosenwald, and they married in 1983. In 1989 they welcomed a child of their own, Elizabeth. He was a loving and supportive father and could not have been more proud of his daughter. He never missed a school play, vocal performance, or an a cappella solo if she was on stage. In 2025, he was thrilled to welcome a grandson into the world.
William is survived by his wife, Martha; his daughter, Elizabeth Minahan and her husband, Sean and their son Daniel; his siblings, Dennis, Karen, Chuck, Jon, and their spouses, Susan, Steve, Suzanne, and Kim; eleven nieces and nephews; as well as grand-nieces and nephews and Troubadour the cat.
Family and friends are invited to William’s calling hours on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 4 until 7 PM at the WESTFORD HEALY FUNERAL HOME, 57 N Main Street, Westford. His funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in the funeral home. Burial to follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Westford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in William’s memory to the charity of your choice.
